From The Giving Practice at Philanthropy Northwest, this is Can We Talk About...? a project to normalize the messiness of leading for racial equity and reflect on what it takes to create lasting transformation. In our pilot season, we're bringing you candid peer to peer conversations between executive directors, board chairs and board members across philanthropy, on the topic of leading for racial equity at the governance level. In each episode, leaders weave together personal and organizational stories offering a level of transparency and vulnerability that really centers the humaneness of this work.

I sometimes feel like maybe other people see me as a seller, because I'm not pushing hard enough, and you know, you're around them, you should be doing this. And at the same time, I'm the CEO, and I can't be doing it in a way that that some folks want to. So it's a really quite a hard place to be in, and I don't know that I have any advice on it, other than to just name it and I think be aware of it.

So I have my biases, I have my whiteness that shows up, I do harm, you know, just continually looking at myself, like when when do I not see what I'm doing? How whiteness is moving through me.

And so we're continuing along those lines, to have a very, very diverse board of directors and I think we are achieving that and not just to represent and to have some sort of tokenism. That's not what we're looking for. We're really looking for an equitable distribution of power. And that is a beautiful thing.

As we ask leaders to explore sticky topics, look for learning practice vulnerability, and give themselves and each other permission to speak in first draft, what we ask of you is to do the same. We also encourage listeners to check out our episode guides at the giving practice.org where you can find additional resources, reflection questions and exercises for you to explore individually and with your boards. Can we talk about launches on July 12 and will be available on Apple podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts
